Hyperbaric therapy and sport: research and realistic expectations

When you train, you also want to make the most of the time between sessions. Interest in hyperbaric therapy in sport has grown. To make a good decision, it helps to look at what was studied, in whom and with which protocol.

Promising research does not mean a guaranteed outcome

Improving a performance measure in a study does not demonstrate that any session will speed recovery for any athlete.

An example of clinical research

A randomized trial published in 2022 studied 37 athletes aged 40–50 and compared 40 sessions of 100% oxygen at 2 ATA with a sham procedure. The final analysis included 31 participants and found improvements in some measures of aerobic capacity in the treated group. The small study size and specific protocol limit generalization. [1]

That result therefore does not allow us to promise the same effect with five or ten sessions at 1.5–1.7 ATA. It also does not, by itself, demonstrate faster recovery from a sports injury.

What about recovery after exercise?

A 2021 systematic review found no significant effect of therapy applied before or after exercise on performance and recovery across the studies analyzed. The authors noted that some favorable signals during exercise required further research. [2]

Studies may address different questions. An aerobic capacity test after weeks of intervention does not answer exactly the same question as “Will I recover in time to train tomorrow?” Separating the two helps support clearer expectations.

Define what you want to discuss

Before choosing sessions, describe your goal: do you want information about wellness, an assessment of persistent discomfort or advice about a diagnosed injury? Each reason leads to a different conversation. An injury requires follow-up recommended by the appropriate professional.

  • Your context: explain which activity you practice and what you hope to gain from the consultation.
  • Your question: ask for a distinction between a demonstrated benefit, one under investigation and a personal expectation.
  • Your follow-up: ask how your experience will be reviewed and when the plan should be reconsidered.

What can you discuss at Hiperbárica Costa Rica?

We provide information about our chair-style chamber and the possibility of an individual assessment. The equipment’s reported pressure range is 1.5–1.7 ATA. We explain that scope without attributing results from different protocols to it or guaranteeing sports improvements.

Learning first helps you decide whether sessions make sense for you, understand their terms and organize your time without relying solely on testimonials or trends.
