Recovery after surgery: the role of hyperbaric therapy

After surgery, it is natural to look for ways to care for yourself better. Hyperbaric therapy may have specific applications, but its usefulness depends on the problem being addressed and your surgical team’s recommendation.

Your surgery is the starting point

Routine recovery and a complication involving a graft or flap are different situations. They require different care decisions.

Where is there a recognized application?

The Undersea & Hyperbaric Medical Society describes hyperbaric oxygen therapy as a possible aid in salvaging grafts or flaps compromised by a lack of oxygen or perfusion. Patient selection and identifying the cause are essential. The society also states that it is not necessary or recommended for supporting normal, uncompromised grafts or flaps. [1]

This distinction avoids an incorrect conclusion: that “it helps certain compromised tissues” means “everyone who has surgery needs sessions.” Dental, cosmetic or other surgery does not in itself establish an automatic indication.

The advantage of a coordinated plan

If your surgeon considers a hyperbaric assessment, coordination helps define a specific clinical question. It also helps ensure that visits, reviews and instructions form part of the same recovery plan.

For you, having that explanation makes it easier to organize your time and know whom to contact with a question. The purpose of a complementary service should be clear before you book it.

Four questions for your treating team

  1. Is there a specific problem we want to treat? Ask for an explanation of what has been observed and the available options.
  2. Is hyperbaric therapy indicated in this case? Ask about evidence relevant to your situation, rather than just to the word “postoperative.”
  3. What kind of service and equipment is needed? Confirm that the proposed protocol can be delivered at the chosen center.
  4. How will follow-up be coordinated? Agree on who will review your progress and how changes will be communicated.

The scope of Hiperbárica Costa Rica

You can ask about an assessment and explain which surgery you have had or are planning. Our equipment has a reported range of 1.5–1.7 ATA; this does not demonstrate equivalence with specialist protocols for salvaging grafts or flaps. The assessment should clarify whether the service is appropriate or a different level of care is needed.

We do not promise a specific reduction in recovery days, an invisible scar or the prevention of every complication. Expectations should reflect your situation and the available information.

Prepare for the conversation

Have the procedure name, date and your surgeon’s instructions ready. Do not stop treatment to begin sessions on your own. If you suspect a complication, contact your treating team immediately rather than waiting for a wellness appointment.

You can also review what to ask before your first session and how to organize a plan of visits.
