Hyperbaric therapy: benefits, uses and whether it is right for you

Understanding what happens inside a chamber is the first step toward a good decision. “Hyperbaric” describes an environment at higher than atmospheric pressure; the benefit of treatment depends on much more than simply entering that environment.

The key idea

The diagnosis, oxygen concentration, pressure and protocol should match the care objective. Two different chambers do not necessarily provide the same treatment.

What is hyperbaric oxygen therapy intended to do?

Clinical hyperbaric oxygen therapy combines highly concentrated oxygen and increased pressure to increase oxygen availability in the body. In selected situations, this combination may support treatment of tissues affected by a lack of oxygen. The FDA explains that these devices have specific medical uses and should be used with professional care. [1]

In which situations does it have applications?

Hyperbaric medicine includes indications such as decompression sickness, carbon monoxide poisoning and certain tissue problems. These situations involve different protocols and care needs. A condition being a recognized indication does not mean every chamber can treat it or that a wellness service is an emergency service. [1]

If you are interested in wound healing or recovery after surgery, it is best to begin with the diagnosis and a conversation with your treating professional. This information helps assess the role of a complementary treatment.

Three questions that make an assessment more useful

  1. What are we trying to improve? Describe your reason for visiting specifically. “I would like to learn about my recovery” starts a more useful conversation than requesting a number of sessions without context.
  2. Which protocol is appropriate? Ask for an explanation of the pressure, oxygen delivered, duration and how these relate to your goal.
  3. How is the decision to continue made? Ask what will be reviewed during follow-up and when the plan will be reconsidered.

What you should know about our service

At Hiperbárica Costa Rica, we use an OXY SPACES S-190C chair-style chamber with a reported pressure range of 1.5–1.7 ATA. We begin by understanding your situation and explaining the scope of the service. This range does not allow us to automatically attribute results from clinical protocols using different pressures and oxygen concentrations to our sessions.

Starting with an assessment has a practical advantage: you can ask questions, learn about preparation, confirm whether the service fits your situation and organize your visits with clear information. If a different level of care is needed, the priority is to use the appropriate service.

Where should you begin?
