Your first hyperbaric chamber session: preparation and key questions

Knowing the process before you arrive helps you organize your visit and discuss your questions comfortably. Preparation begins with an assessment and the specific instructions for the equipment that will be used.

Your comfort begins with asking

Before entering, you should know what the session will involve, how to report discomfort and whom to ask for help.

Before booking

Ask whether you need a referral, how the assessment works and how much time to allow for the full visit. An appointment may include preparation and review as well as time inside the chamber.

At Hiperbárica Costa Rica, you can start a conversation on WhatsApp to ask about availability, location and terms. To protect your privacy, you do not need to send medical records in that first contact.

Discuss your health and questions

The assessment is the time to discuss your medical history, medications, recent health changes or concerns about enclosed spaces. Do not alter treatments on your own to attend. Ask the professional for instructions appropriate to your situation.

The purpose of that conversation is to decide whether starting is appropriate and explain the scope of the service. Our reported range of 1.5–1.7 ATA is not automatically equivalent to other hyperbaric medicine protocols.

What might you feel?

Pressure changes may cause blocked ears or discomfort. Mayo Clinic explains that the care team teaches ways to equalize pressure and that adverse effects can occur, including ear or sinus problems and, less often, serious complications. Report any discomfort during the session; do not hide it to try to complete the session. [1]

Clothing, products and objects

The FDA recommends following the manufacturer’s instructions on permitted clothing materials, products and objects, together with fire prevention measures and supervision during use. Concentrated oxygen increases the risk of fire. [2]

Ask for the preparation list before your appointment and check any item you want to bring. Do not assume that a phone, accessory or personal care product is permitted simply because you normally use it.

Your questions for the visit

  • What does the assessment include, and who will explain the plan?
  • What is the pressure, and how is oxygen delivered?
  • How can I communicate during the session?
  • What should I do if I feel discomfort?
  • What will be reviewed afterward, and how are the next steps decided?

After the session

Share how you felt and raise any questions before scheduling more visits. A first session provides an opportunity to discuss tolerance and follow-up; by itself, it does not demonstrate effectiveness for a disease.

If continuing is recommended after your assessment, you can ask about individual sessions and plans of 5 or 10 sessions. Your choice is organized around the professional care plan.
